Outside of Canada, UK fans can check *Slo Pitch* out on Sky while HBO Max is batting up with this one in Australia. Does that make sense? I don't really do sports. — If you're getting bogged down by the state of the world today and don't feel like life is worth living, may I please remind you that ***Drag Race Philippines*** season 4 and ***Drag Race España*** season 6 both start this week (today and on Sunday, respectively). Queer competitors include *Heartstopper's* Sebastian Croft, *Last of Us* star Bella Ramsey, comedian Joe Lycett and *Industry* actor Myha'la. Narrated by a mythical white peacock (!!), ***Playing with Fire: An Ecosexual Emergency*** is defiantly queer and unlike any other doc you'll see this year. A group of students drawn into a forbidden ethical abyss. Smith was kind and loyal and charming and presumably hung like a horse if Samantha's satisfaction is anything to go by. Remember when he shaved his own hair because Samantha was going through chemo? There he meets an asylum seeker from Syria named Tareq, played by Boodi Kabbani, who develops a special bond with Leevi. Given the international nature of the connection that forms, neither one speaks their native language together. Instead, most of the dialogue is in English, which is rather unusual for a Finnish film. That is, until they're done with talking and their body language suddenly kicks in. Racial and generational divides are explored through this gorgeous romance, quietly intense and deeply moving. Puustinen and Kabbani are mesmerising to watch, mostly improvising conversations that grow increasingly intimate, informed by their own queerness. It’s no wonder they both won a joint prize for Best Actor together at the Nordic International Film Festival. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/28/91/2891aa17-ae73-4ddb-b44a-370856eda4ac/content/images/2026/09/reeds2.jpg) Credit: Peccadillo Pictures Kabbani is reportedly the world's first openly gay Syrian actor, making this the extremely rare example of Syrian queerness that's shaped by an authentically queer perspective on screen. Queer Middle Eastern characters are often exoticised or sexualised, and that's if they ever appear at all. That *A Moment in the Reeds* remains revolutionary almost 10 years on is impressive but also disappointing given how far we should have come by now. There are shades of [*God's Own Country*](https://www.cruisingcinema.com/gods-own-country-brandy-anthony-keyvan/) in this film — which happened to be released in the same year — and you can also see elements of what would shape Mäkelä's next title, *Sebastian* (2024), even if the latter is far more ferocious in its approach to sex. Fans of Marvel and hot boys will want to check that one out as the lead, Ruaridh Mollica, is set to play Tommy Maximoff, aka, Wanda's son Speed, in *VisionQuest*.
