BONUS ISSUE — Your new favourite film, La Bola Negra, just dropped a gorgeous gay trailer and new posters
It's already won 16 Oscars in my house.
Like drinking iced coffee or avoiding tacos on date night, the Oscars are a gay tradition. But next year, they're about to get a whole lot gayer.
Following its world premiere at Cannes in May, La Bola Negra has quickly positioned itself as a major awards contender with glowing reviews across the board.
Rafa Sales Ross of Little White Lies said: "This decades-spanning love odyssey is as impressive as it is moving, grabbing at the visceral nature of Lorca’s genre-bending work to mould its staggeringly boisterous cinematic equivalent."
Sophie Monks Kaufman of Indiewire said: "It is nearly impossible to grasp the structural effort required to fluidly create one perfectly coherent story using three narratives told across three timelines, each with a distinct visual identity."
David Opie of Cruising Cinema said: "I haven't seen it, but it looks banging."
Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, aka Los Javis, aka the hot judges on Drag Race España, La Bola Negra tells the story of three gay men across three different eras; 1932, 1937 and 2017.
The film explores how their lives are connected beyond time and space, whether they're on the cusp of the Spanish Civil War, navigating pre-dictatorship Spain or dredging up the past again decades later.
Led by Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, La Bola Negra balances collective memory and trauma with deeply emotional, intrinsically queer histories of a very personal nature. By all accounts, the result is a bold, sweeping classic in the making.
Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, two bonafide mothers, also star in the film, which is how you know it's great. Because, let's face it; they bring it to you every bola.

La Bola Negra will open theatrically on October 16th, before launching on Netflix on December 2nd.
